This is one of the more original stories I've read and it was just the right kind of awesome up until about 3/4 in. Okay, the kid was a little too annoyingly wise. I have 11 and 7 year old boys, I know what they (should) sound like, but this kid is more mature than my 52 year old husband. But, besides a few eyerolls, that didn't really bug me. While the book was angsty and emo, it was very, very well done angsty emoness. Lord knows I have no problem with that.
But then it went over the top with interrupted conversations at crucial moments and Bear caving to ridiculous demands from his idiot mother and forcing an equally ridiculous break up, and too many tearful confessions and anger and group hugs. Fortunately, it all calmed down a bit again by the end.
So in the end, 4 stars, because I really enjoyed it up until the last part.
